January 10, 2023What is required for arc flash training?
Arc flash training is typically required for workers who may be exposed to the hazards associated with arc flash incidents, such as electrical engineers, electricians, and maintenance workers. The training typically covers the following topics:
- Understanding the hazards associated with arc flash incidents, including the causes, effects, and potential injuries.
- Identify the types of electrical equipment and systems most likely to experience arc flash incidents and understand the different types of arc flash hazards.
- Learning about the safe work practices and procedures that should be followed to minimize the risk of arc flash incidents, such as lockout/tagout procedures, proper PPE usage, and selecting the correct PPE.
- Understanding how to properly use arc flash labels and warning signs and interpret the information on them.
- Familiarizing with emergency response procedures in an arc flash incident, such as how to call for emergency assistance and safely shut down electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements, such as OSHA, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7.
- Hands-on training is also essential, such as simulated scenarios, mock drills, and training with actual equipment with de-energized power.
It’s also important to note that additional training and education are essential as some equipment and system upgrades and changes or new technology that addresses arc flash hazards are introduced.
