An arc flash study is typically required when changes are made to a facility’s electrical distribution system, such as when new equipment is added or existing equipment is modified. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommend that employers conduct an arc flash hazard analysis when changes to the electrical system are made. Additionally, OSHA requires employers to conduct an arc flash hazard analysis when employees are exposed to an electric arc flash hazard.
However, even if no changes have been made to the facility’s electrical system, an arc flash study may still be required if it has not been updated. The National Electric Code (NEC) recommends that arc flash hazard analysis be performed at least every five years or whenever changes in the facility’s electrical system create a new arc flash hazard.
It is important to note that even if the facility meets the above criteria, performing an arc flash study is not mandatory. But, it is highly recommended by safety experts for the safety of the employees working near the electrical systems.
