How much does an arc flash study cost?
January 10, 2023Why do I need arc flash labels and a study?
January 10, 2023Are arc flash studies required by the NEC code?
The National Electric Code (NEC) does not require employers to conduct arc flash studies, but it does guide how to address arc flash hazards in the workplace.
NEC 70E standard, which is the standard for electrical safety in the workplace, provides guidelines on how to perform an arc flash hazard analysis and select personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect workers from the hazards of an arc flash.
NEC 70E also recommends performing arc flash hazard analysis to determine the level of incident energy that employees may be exposed to and the appropriate level of PPE necessary to protect them from injury. The standard also requires employers to provide employees with the necessary information and training to safely perform their job responsibilities, including information about arc flash hazards and the procedures for working safely around electrical equipment.
The NEC also states that the analysis should be performed at least every five years or whenever changes in the facility’s electrical system create a new arc flash hazard. As the NEC is a set of codes and standards, it’s worth mentioning that different states and municipalities may have different interpretations and enforcement policies of the NEC.
So, while the NEC does not require arc flash studies, it provides guidelines on how to address arc flash hazards in the workplace and recommends employers to conduct arc flash studies to ensure the safety of the employees.
