The most recent update to the NFPA 70E standard for electrical safety in the workplace occurred in 2021.

Over the past two-plus years, the NFPA 70E technical committee has engaged in a lengthy process that includes soliciting public input, developing drafts of the updated standard, soliciting comments, reviewing those comments, and ultimately releasing the consent standard to the public.

As of the publication date of this blog, the NFPA 70E 2024 edition is still undergoing review, and we anticipate that the revised standard will be finalized by June 2023.

What modifications are anticipated for the NFPA 70E 2024 edition?
1. Consistency requires that the word “electric” be added before “shock” globally.

2. Explanatory materials – Section 90.5(C), if the standard reference does not include a date, the reference shall be considered to be the most recent edition of the standard.

3. Article 100 revises the definitions of electrically safe workplace conditions.
Updates to Article 105.2’s purpose describe the standard’s purpose in terms of risk reduction.

4. The definition of “hot sticks” as “live line tools” should be clarified in Section 250.2.
